California Tax Calculation Example:
Let’s calculate the taxes for a single filer living in California who earns $55,000 annually.

1.Federal Tax Calculation:
  • Standard deduction: $14,600.
  • Taxable income for state tax: $55,000 - $14,600 = $40,400.
  • Federeal tax rate (12%):
    $11,600 x 10% + ($40,400 - $11,600) x 12% = $4,616
  • Federal tax owed: $4,616.

2.State Tax Calculation:
  • Standard deduction: $5,363.
  • Taxable income for state tax: $55,000 - $5,363 = $49,637.
  • State tax rate (5.5%):
    $10,412 x 1% + ($24,684- $10,412) x 2% + ($38,959 - $24,684) x 4% + ($49,637 - $38,959) x 6% =$1,601.
  • State tax owed: $1,601.

3.Social Security Tax (No deductions, taxed on gross income):
  • $55,000 x 6.2% = $3,410.
  • Social security tax owed: $3,410.

4.Medicare Tax (No deductions, taxed on gross income):
  • $55,000 x 1.45% = $798.
  • Medicare tax owed: $798.

5.Total Tax:
  • $4,616 + $1,601 + $3,410 + $798 = $10,425

6.Net Pay
  • $55,000 - $10,425 = $44,575
